Body Piercing Aftercare

Body Piercing After Care

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY PIERCING?

For all piercings during healing AVOID:

  • Moving or rotating your jewelry. This will dramatically slow the healing process and extend your healing time. This may also increase your risk of irritation, infection and cause localized bruising or excessive bleeding following the procedure. We STRONGLY advise against the consumption of these substances before the piercing, and during the healing period prescribed by your piercer.
  • Touching your piercing in any way, particularly with unwashed hands, as this can increase the chance of infection and will slow the healing process. Ensure hands are clean every time if you absolutely must touch your piercing.
  • Over cleaning. Only clean your piercing as directed by your piercer. Over cleaning can result in slow healing.
  • Oral contact under any circumstances.
  • Sleeping on it - the constant pressure from this can change the angle that your piercing heals on and can cause unwanted irritation to the area.
  • Chlorinated water such as swimming pools as this can cause irritation. Avoid pools and spas for the entire healing period prescribed by your piercer.
  • Changing your jewelry prior to the recommended healing period - you may damage the healing tissue and/or develop an infection in the process if not done in the correct environment.
  • Shampoo, conditioner residue and soaps. Make sure you rinse these away thoroughly. Also avoid direct contact with make-up, and products such as hair sprays.
  • Restrictive clothing and/or unwashed linen. Cotton and breathable materials will benefit over synthetic materials.
  • Illicit drugs and alcohol consumption for the entire duration of the healing period (Especially with oral piercings). These substances will hinder your ability to successfully heal and can cause unnecessary bleeding, swelling and bruising.

Remember to:

  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle.
  • Change bedding and towels regularly.
  • Contact your piercer if you have any questions or queries.

I'M WORRIED ABOUT MY PIERCING. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Make sure you’re following the after care instructions your piercer issued you with.
Some redness and swelling is expected for certain piercings as your piercer would have explained. This usually subsides after a week.
If you think you’re experiencing too much redness or swelling, or if you have any concerns regarding the healing of your piercing, please come back into your local Punktured studio and have it assessed.
Even if you’ve been pierced somewhere else, we’re more than happy to assist.

CAN I EAT OR DRINK BEFORE AND AFTER MY PIERCING?

Eating before a piercing and ensuring your body is well fueled is highly advised. Maintaining a regular, healthy diet after following your new piercing is the best course of action as the human body relies on sustenance, vitamins, minerals water and rest in order to heal. In the case of some oral piercings, eating can be a strange sensation initially, so care is advised when adjusting to this type of piercing.

DRUGS & ALCOHOL

In most cases, the consumption of drugs and/or alcohol WILL affect the healing process and promote undesirable effects during the healing period.
In the case of oral piercings alcohol consumption of any type will cause further complications to swelling, slow healing or promote a multitude of other issues. These can be further outlined by one of our friendly piercers
It is strongly advised against until healing is complete.
